First Five Days in France gone over 30 000 iPhones

December 05, 07 by Crossover

side-profile

French mobile phone operator Orange sold 30,000 iPhones in the five days following its November 29 launch, the company said Wednesday.

In comparison, German operator T-Mobile said it sold 10,000 on November 9, the day the phone went on sale there. Apple’s U.K. partner O2 said the phone is its fastest-selling ever, but refused to give sales figures.

Some 80 percent of Orange customers bought the iPhone with an "Orange for iPhone" service contract that includes unlimited access to the Internet and the Visual Voicemail service.

Those customers paid €399 (US$585) for their iPhone, the same price T-Mobile charges for its iPhones.

Orange also offers the iPhone for €549 with other types of contract, or €649 without a contract.

About 1,500 were sold without a contract, said Orange spokesman Louis Michel Aymard.

Customers buying an iPhone from Orange for use on another operator’s network must pay a €100 unlocking charge, which is waived if they wait for six months from the purchase date. Since an iPhone without a contract is of little use on Orange’s network, the majority of those 1,500 customers have probably unlocked their phones, Aymard said.

Orange is now the only one of Apple’s network operator partners to sell the iPhone unlocked. It does so to comply with a French law that forbids making the sale of one item conditional on the sale of another.

Apple patenting multi-touch for whole hand?

November 29, 07 by Crossover

applefullhandmultitouch-lg2

Apple may extend the multi-touch technology found in its iPhone and iPod touch to larger displays by implementing new inventions which allow users to use different parts of their hand as well as use different presses to trigger certain actions, according to three patent filings published today. Comprising a patent for a sensor arrangement that addresses different parts of the hand as well as accompanying patents for conductors and sensors, the development relies on an array of improved capacitive sensors that can not only detect the proximity of hand contact but also determine which part of the hand is in use by the surface area. The system is also sensitive to pressure across multiple areas, Apple says.

Microsoft Windows OS vs Apple Mac OS

winvsmac Since Windows 95 dropped more than a decade ago, our desktops have evolved to no end. Having recently had a fresh Leopard install on our Macs, we thought we would take a look back, with a side-by-side comparison of Windows and Mac operating systems by visual interface alone. All the major releases are here, and it is interesting to see the general progression made by even just the UI. Vodafone attacks T-Mobile on iPhone sales terms

November 20, 07 by Crossover

A German court has granted British telecoms group Vodafone (VOD.L) a preliminary injunction against Deutsche Telekom’s mobile unit T-Mobile over its sales terms for Apple’s (AAPL.O) iPhone.

According to the injunction, filed at a regional court in Hamburg, the goal is to stop the sale of the iPhone if it is sold only in connection with a 24 month T-Mobile contract and/or is blocked in such a way that it can only be used in a T-Mobile network.

A court spokeswoman said that T-Mobile, which secured the rights to sell the iPhone exclusively in Germany, can file an objection.

A T-Mobile spokesman said on Tuesday the company had received the injunction but would continue to sell the music-playing and Web-browsing device, which went on sale Nov 9 in Germany.
