Dubbed Friends of Friends (FoF), the service will allow gamers to find old chums or connect with new ones over Xbox Live!, Microsoft said. It will also allow users to check out the profiles of friends of friends, send messages, invite people to join games and compare achievement stats.

You can optionally install a firewall to protect your computer against unauthorized access by people on the Internet or your network. Firewalls block connections to your computer from unknown sources, which helps to prevent security breaches.

  1. Install the firestarter package from the “Universe” repository (see Add Applications).

  2. To start Firestarter, choose System → Administration → Firestarter, and enter your administrator password when prompted.

  3. The Firewall Wizard should run. If it does not, press Firewall → Run Wizard.

  4. Follow the steps in the Firewall Wizard. After completing all of the steps, the firewall should be configured and running.

  5. To check that your firewall is working correctly, make use of an online firewall testing service such as ShieldsUP.

For help and advice on the advanced configuration of Firestarter, see the Firestarter Online Manual.

Hacking VoIP

November 29, 07 by Crossover

An expert has released a proof-of-concept program to show how easy it would be for criminals to eavesdrop on the VoIP-based phone calls of any company using the technology.

voip-station

Called SIPtap, the software is able to monitor multiple Voice-over-IP (VoIP) call streams, listening in and recording them for remote inspection as .wav files. All that the criminal would need would be to infect a single PC inside the network with a Trojan incorporating these functions, although the hack would work at ISP level as well.

The program can index ‘IP-tapped’ calls by caller - using SIP identity information - and by recipient, and even by date. Running from August this year until the most recent tap on 21 November, SIPtap had no problems in extracting enough information on the test network to prove that call recording of any and every VoIP call at a hypothetical company was now a trivial exercise.

SIPtap demonstrates that the worst-case nightmares of VoIP vulnerability are now well within the capabilities of organised crime, which could use such a program to steal confidential data from companies, governments and even the police.

Adobe Brings Yahoo! AdSense to PDF Documents

November 29, 07 by Crossover

Adobe introduced a free “Ads for PDF” program that allows content publishers to monetize PDF documents that are distributed online via email or websites.

adobepdfadvertising

Like Google AdSense, Adobe will show contextual ads when the PDF file is viewed inside Adobe Reader or Acrobat Writer - publishers make money from the PDF file when readers click on those ads. Surprisingly, there’s no talk about Adobe Digital Editions, the original advertising-supported PDF viewer.

To enable ads in your eBooks and other PDF files, publishers will just have upload their document to Adobe website. When people download and open that ad-enabled PDF file in Acrobat or Adobe Writer, they’ll see contextual ads inside the PDF.

Falling Rain

I never thought that highly about the Windows Vista exclusive add-on called Dreamscene which made it possible to display animated backgrounds in Windows. The main reason for my reservation was probably that I did not like the default videos that Microsoft was using to advertise Dreamscene.
